A Visit from Nemesis

or is it Hubris?

‘Twas the night before Christmas when all through the world
Science warned of the perils which soon would unfurl
Like a veil across nations, some variant virus
Respecting no frontiers, a fate undesirous.

But bad politicians (who cared not one jot
For the weak, old or ignorant) hastened their plot
To party all night while denying the fact;
Just flaunting their privilege, which others lacked.

But turkeys will finally come home to their roost,
With leaks to the press and the media now loosed.
It all adds to the sins seeking bottoms to bite:
“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

A reflection on contemporary politics, after a Conservative PM, his Cabinet and his coterie were revealed in December 2021 to have partied through 2020 while the country went through various lockdowns and periods of self-isolation.

With apologies to Clement Clarke Moore and his poem ‘A Visit from St. Nicholas’ (1822)

Actualités

To the unjust, one trusts, just desserts come their way,
if it’s true, as they say, every dog has its day.

A plague and a pest on corrupt politicians:
it’s time they considered their ill-gained positions.

We used to have in olden times the desolation blues;
Now it’s masks and distancing and isolation news.

Aftermath

Instead of compassion
you gave us competition;
we needed principles,
not career politicians;
we wanted social justice
yet you opted for selfishness;
we urged voting with conscience,
you preferred tribal loyalty;
we wished for inclusion
but you relished division;
where we fought for truth
you peddled lies,
when we yearned for hope
you fed us fear.

We’ve seen the dawn of despair.

The Real McCoy

How should I describe thee?

Let me list the ways:

arrogant, bullying, cheating demagogue,
egotistical, fascistic, groping hypocrite,
ignorant, jeering, kleptomaniac liar,
misogynistic, narcissistic, obscene pussygrabber,
queer bashing, racist, self-serving totalitarian,
unqualified, vulgar womaniser,
xenophobic, yahoo Zionazi

and that’s just for starters

You’re having a laugh

You told us we’d be taking back control
But you were having a laugh
You controlled our media and our data,
Our posts, our shares, our sayings,
Our benefits and our credit ratings
For you were taking back control

You called it saving our health service
But you were having a laugh
You were giving it to your cronies
And offering them our monies,
Our wealth, our health, our bodies
And you were taking back control

You said you were strong and stable
But you were having a laugh
You were fuelled with lust for power
And you took what’s rightfully ours
You took the rights from all the people
And you gave it to your pals
For you were taking back control

We ask you lots of questions
But you’re still having a laugh
For you won’t give us straight answers
You nasty lot of chancers
Down a road of thorns, not roses,
You will lead us by the noses
And you’ll drag us to perdition
While you charge us with sedition
You’ll be laughing, always laughing
While you’re taking back control

But we’re not laughing

• Another piece — rather political, for a change — produced for a creative writing class on composing poetry, this time using repeating rhythms and/or rhymes. By the way, yesterday May 3rd was World Press Freedom Day
